Corrections on the Artillery

Hi all,

Just noticed a few errors crept into the artillery cards so I updated them with the stats that I had in mind.

I wanted the Scout Artillery unit to be more powerful and flexible so that it could reflect that the Scout batteries were very well trained and reasonably equipped. The Philippine Army batteries, on the other hand, were recentally organized and many of them weren't finished training when the war broke out. Also, many batteries just didn't have the necessary fire control equipment that was necessary to fire indirect missions so they were used in purely direct fire modes. Later on I'll introduce a "better" PA artillery card that can fire indirect missions... there were a few that could according to the sources that I have.

Anyway here are the corrected cards:




This coming weekend I'll run a couple of games set during the early part of the Luzon Campaign pitting the 26th Cavalry, various Philippine Army units, and the tanks and SPMs against the full might of the Japanese 48th Division.

Should be a hoot!

Axis and Allies Philippines Custom Cards

Hi All,

Most of these cards are for the US, only one for the Japanese. I just didn't think that the current selection of US cards are enough to really cover for the wildly different troop types that were used in the Philippines. The current Japanese selection seems to fit the bill though.

Off to Historicon???

Well, it's that time of year again and I'm going to head off soon to Historicon. It's a great convention and usually it's very close to Baltimore. This year it's in Valley Forge, PA. That's a bit of a haul for me.

My nephew Mike wants to go too. That's great news because he hasn't asked me to go to one of the conventions in a long time. When Mike was a little kid he went with me to every one of them and really enjoyed. Lately, however, he has gotten into the whole teen scene, jobs, and just basically being a young adult (hummm... what does that say about me! I'm almost 40 and I still go to the conventions)..

Anyway, my original plan was to go to Historicon and spend the night at a hotel so that I could get two days at the con. However Mike adds a bit more to the cost side of things. With it being summer money is tight for the family. I haven't decided whether or not to stay the night.

I guess I'll keep dwelling on it until I make-up my mind.

I am going to try to get into some of the Axis & Allies gaming there though. I really like the system and I want to try it out at a convention. That could mean a late night though!

Regardless, it's great that Mike wants to come! I really enjoyed having him with me in the past and I really look forward to this trip now!

So how does one go about corrupting one's nephews?

It really isn't too hard really!

I'm starting this blog while I'm on vacation in Alabama visiting my family. My brother Jim and his son Jonah flew to my parent's home in Decatur, Alabama for a quick visit. Visit? More like a family reunion. Anyway, I knew that I would have a lot of down time between family meals, trips to the sites, and Point Mallard so I decided to bring my smallish collection of Axis and Allies: War at Sea miniatures with me. I figured that I had little to lose. The game has some cool toys so it might gain some attention.

It was a run away success! Everyone was over here at my dad's house and the adults (minus me) were off chattering in the family room. So I hooked up with my nephews Cooper and Jonah and suggested that they try out Axis and Allies. These guys are both in middle school and were pretty bored so the appeal of something to do and cool minis hooked them in. We played two rounds and both boys really enjoyed themselves.

As the night wore on my older nephew, Brian, started hanging around to watch the games. He's a pretty cool high-school kid so I was surprised when he stayed around. At first it was to annoy his brother (Cooper), but later he started showing real interest in the game.

Anyway, by Monday I got all of them to try out the game. In fact, Jonah got so into the game that I gave him some minis to get started. I'm fairly sure that Cooper (and Brian!) aren't too far out from getting the base set themselves.

My work here is done...
